1st ODI : Sri Lanka 411/8 in 50 overs : India wins, by 3 runs.
Fastest century, largest total & highest score ~ 3 biggest record in one day cricket came under threat today at Rajkot.. none got broken, but we had a miracle of a match. margin? 3 runs.As emotionless as a human can be, captains from both sides impressed the most, rallying their bowlers courageously on a placid pitch that had everything tilded towards batters, from short baundaries to quick outfield and hungry crowd. MS Dhoni scored 72 runs from only 53 balls while Kumar Sangakkara nearly broke Lankan record for quickest ODI hundred but fell 10 run short of 3 figures (43 balls). Both captain, at the toss, agreed they would have fielded first. Coin came down in Sri Lankan favour and Virendra Sehwag + Sachin Tendulkar started India's innings, rather slowly (first 5 overs only 19 runs) against some accurate new ball bowling from Nuwan Kulasekara and debutant Chanaka Welegedera. Then, acceleration happened, and how. India 50/0 in 8.3 overs, 100/0 in 14.3 and 150/0 by the end of 19th over, and it was only the begining. Virendra Sehwag and MS Dhoni then added 66 ball century partnership, pushing India past 200 run mark in 25th over and 300/1 before the 36th over finished. Sri Lankan were not playing any spinner in this match and Sehwag looked good for first ever one day double century (his pull shots were a treat to watch) but a Welegedera delivery scooped off his outside edge and Dilshan took easy catch at backward point. Powerplay 3 : India 33 for 3 wkts, triggering a middle order collapse and home team finished with 414/7 when 450 or even 500 seemed a distinct posibility.
Sri Lankan chase had similar watchfulness at begining before Tillakaratane broke lose, completing half century off 38 balls and then century in 73 balls. Dilshan's opening stand with Upul Tharanga (67 off 60) added 188 runs which is now the biggest for Sri Lanka in India by far, beating 57 between Sanath Jayasuriya and Marvan Atapattu.Dilshan had exhaunted by the time Tharanga departed, so decided to play sheetanchor role cause Kumar Sangakkara started to time everything from middle of his bat, finding gaps in Madhavrao Scindia ground artistically. Sangakkara's first 100 runs of 128 run partnership for 2nd wicket with Dilshan came off 62 balls. Needing 99 from 81 balls with 8 wickets in hand when Sangakkara mistimed a pull shot off Praveen Kumar to be caught at fine leg by Ravindra Jadeja, Sri Lanka were sailing fast to victory banks but Zaheer Khan and 5 over spell from Ashish Nehra pressurised visitors middle order for 3 more wkts (all runouts). Powerplay 3 : Sri Lanka 52/3. Thilan Kandambi and Angelo Mathews reignited Lankan hopes with a careful 56 run partnership but Indians had smelled a miraculous win by then. margin 3 runs!
