Finally a "Leg Spinner" from India - Piyush Chawla.

You watch him walking around in the field - he seem like focused on the game.

You watch him bowling - he seems like little over confident of his Googlies and flighted ones..

You watch him bat and he will pretend to be a lazy batsmen, but with all answers that a bowler can ask..!!

Yes, that's Piyush Chawla for you. After making his debut for Uttar Pradesh at a tender age of 17, Piyush Chawla impressed one and all to win his ticket to Sri Lanka for the Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka.

Although India lost in the finals against Pakistan, while chasing a minor target of 110 against some inspired swing bowling from Pakistani youngsters, Piyush Chawla was the boy who made the highest score for India - 25 (after bowling 8 overs for 8 runs) and never looked in any touble while wickets fell from other end and 8 Indian batsmen fell without reaching a double figure. Piyush also picked you 13 wickets in 7 under-19 World cup matches and was the fourth highest wicket taker then.

The abilities : The fact remains that not many leg spinners has been able to kiss the stumps of Mr. Sachin Tendulkar. But Piyush Chawla did it at the the NKP challenger's trophy in 2005. Tendulkar failed to pick up the googly from chawla and was bowled during that match between India Seniors and India B.

Apart from a very good googly, Piyush also knows when and how to serve them to the batsmen in order to get the best results. He says he is been working on his "straighter one" but his strength is his leg spin balls, which he wants to spin only as much to beat the bat and get the edge rather than spinning it a long way to miss the batsmen's reach.

The best thing about Piyush Chawla's leg spinners is that he is not afraid to flight the ball, inviting the batsmen to come down the wicket. And with a height of 5 feets and 9 inches, Piyush is build nearly perfect to be a leg spinner as taller ones fail to flight the ball as much as required.

Another amazing thing about this cricketer is that he is a cool batsman. holding the bat in his left hand, Piyush Chawla has the ability to bat for lonPiyushChawlaOnDebut.jpgg periods and he might seem like a lazy player - trying to nudge every ball to the third man for a single, he also has the ability to play the pull/hook shot and drive the ball.

But all in all, a real potential All rounder who needs to be worked on well to flourish someday..

The International chance : Piyush Chawla made his debut against England at Mohali on 9th of March but failed to make a mark. The problem was he looked nervous and also that he got only 85 deliveries to bowl. He was taken off by Captain Dravid when Kevin Pietersen started to attack the youngster - slogging him to the mid-wicket.

And then he was dropped from the squad... it was said that Piyush is young and needs to play some Domestic matches before he perfects the dificult "art of Leg Spin"... So, Piyush went to Domestic cricket and was given plenty of chances. But the fact remained that he still was less than 19 years old and thus played plenty of Under 19 games like The World cup, Afro-asia tournament, Under-19's tour of Pakistan (where he was the captain) and then the Nissar Khan trophy against Sialkot at Dharamsala while playing for his state team - Uttar Pradesh.

Everywhere, Chawla's bowl turned and his bat made a mark. Now with just one year hence, Chawla is back into India Green team for NKP Salve Challenger's trophy at Chennai.

Another opportunity coming : Another fact from India's perspective is that Anil Kumble has nearly come to the end of his career. Even when Harbhajan Singh is improving every day as a World class off spinner, Indian team is in need of another spinner from the other end. And if that other spinner can be a leg spinner, it will be a blessing for the team..

Apart from foxing batsman like Sachin Tendulkar, with an equal amount of abilities as a batsman, Piyush Chawla might just be the man (a boy as yet) Indian team needs.
