Lanky Line Length special from Bengal : Ranadeb Bose

RanadebBose101.jpgDo you know since when Ranji Trophy (India's premier first class cricket tournament) is being played? let me save you some googling -- it was first played in 1934 with Mumbai winning it. July was the month, with Maharaja of Patiala donating the winner's trophy.

So since 1934, 73 years that it is, no bowler has picked up more than 57 wickets in one full season. 5 bowlers have got to exactly 57, n our topic - Ranadeb Bose from Bengal team is one of them. They say Ranadeb used to do the containing job (means bowling economically), while SS Paul tried to pick wickets at other end.. 2006 Ranji season came with an absence of Paul, so Ranadeb Bose became Bengal's main weapon. strike bowler as they call it. 57 wickets I've already told you about..

Question is, what makes Ranadeb Bose a potential candidate to set International test cricket at fire? His height of over 6 feet or his action like Joel Garner of West Indies? actually none of them. Rana deb is a nagger. He'll bowl a typical line outside off stump, with not much speed (around 125 to 130 Kmph) but every single ball will land at one spot no wider than a handkerchief. From that 'just short of' driving length, Ranadep Bose will bring 1 ball into the batsman, with 5 other going away.. very much like Glenn McGrath of Australia used to do. Difference I'll say, is that McGrath never swung the ball too much, just enough to take the edge, not to get past it. Our Ranadeb Bose has sweet outswingers too, coming from a high arm action, but they at time swing little too much. Bose controlled it in 2006, so the record he touched.. had he controlled the swing a little more, he might just have broken it as well.

To back my comparison with Aussie legend, eat some career statistics from this Bengal speedster in Domestic cricket.. 54 first class matches (before being selected for Indian squad to England tour) has fetched him 194 wickets at an ECONOMY rate of 2.64. his best bowling figures in Ranji cricket is 7 for 24, and he has been into the circuit since 1998-99 season.

Good thing is Indian team go on Australia tour in very short months after England. which will help Ranadeep Ranjit Bose from Calcutta (now Kolkatta) in bowling on favorable pitches. The trick of picking wickets on those hard bouncy wickets is again - pitch the ball on that handkerchief, & I'm look forward to seeing that happen. India Team also has Venkatesh Prasad as specialist bowling coach, who himself was as lanky as Ranadeb Bose is. & both had great away going deliveries..

Before I finish, know one more speciality of fast medium bowler from India - Ranadeb Bose. He never bowls no balls. Not front foot no balls at least. Bose bowled a total of 10,658 deliveries last season ~ few of them were intentional bouncers in the heat of the game, but none of them were foot no-balls.
