Australia lose home Test & ODI series together, first time ever!Filed under
SA in AUS ODI Series 2009
I was asked a tough question at our forum couple of days back.. Has Australian cricket
team ever lost a test series and also the ODI series at home on same tour by a
visiting team? Then, answer was no. From today onwards, answer is yes ~ South Africa beat Australia in Australia in both test & ODI series on this 2008-09 tour by a clear margin of 2-1 in Tests & dominating result of 4-1 in following series of 5 One day internationals. With both the trophies, Proteas also snatched numero uno tag aka ICC World Number 1 team ranking from Aussies who, under captainship of Ricky Ponting, appeared teethless, clueless kangaroos for most part of this cricket series. The only silver lining for former world number one cricket team is that they travel to South Africa inside a month for similar revenge series, Australia vs South Africa in South Africa, March-April 2009. Coming into this 5th ODI at Perth, South Africa had already sealed the series with 3-1 unbeatable margin. They allowed two rookies (Lonwabo Tsotsobe & Wayne Parnell) to make their debut and tested themselves by electing to bat first after having chased successfully in previous 3 out of 4 games.. yet, at no point in this match, they allowed Australians to take drivers seat to win it by 39 runs.. much more comfortably than the result margin suggests! 5th ODI Scores South Africa (elected to bat) = 288 for 6 wickets in 50 overs. Hashim Amla 97 (117b, 6x4, 1x6), AB de Villiers 60 (71b, 4x4), JP Duminy 60* (42b, 3x4, 3x6), James Hopes = 9-1-44-3. Australia (Chasing 289) = 249 all out in 49 overs David Warner 22, Ponting 12, Michael Hussey 78 (96b, 5x4, 1x6), David Hussey 32, Brad Haddin 63 (50b, 5x4, 1x6), Clarke 0, Lonwabo Tsotsobe = 9-0-50-4, Johan Botha = 10-0-38-0. South Africa won by 39 runs, and ODI series with 4-1 margin. To relive this rare series, following are result stories from itsonlycricket.com coverage in month of December 2008 & January 2009. 1st Test, Perth : South Africa won by 6 wickets, chasing 414 in 4th innings, miraculously. 2nd Test, Melbourne : South Africa won by 9 wickets, miraculously again! 3rd Test, Sydney : Australia won by 103 runs, get consolation victory. 1st Twenty20, Melbourne : Australia won by 53 runs, David Warner's scintillating debut. 2nd Twenty20, Brisbane : Australia won by 6 wickets, deservingly! 1st ODI, Melbourne : South Africa won by 3 wickets, a thriller! 2nd ODI, Hobart : Australia won by 5 runs, yet another thriller! 3rd ODI, Sydney : South Africa won by 3 wickets, chasing 270! 4th ODI, Adelaide : South Africa won by 8 wickets, rather easily! 5th ODI, Perth : South Africa won by 39 runs, this match!! Note : Lonwabo Tsotsobe made his debut for South Africa today exactly 11 years since his father figure & Idol - Makhaya Ntini began his International career at the same ground in Perth. Note : Australia lost their World Number 1 ranking after losing this match but they start a fresh 5 match ODI series with neighbors New Zealand in 48 hours and they might well regain their crown if they win against Kiwis.
