Day 1 : Benn spoils Pietersen's Party, Windies marginally ahead.Filed under
Eng v WI Jamaica Test 2009
When it swings, it spins.. even on Day 1 - said Aussie spin legend Shane Warne a long while ago. even today, he's correct!Sulieman Benn ~ a lanky West Indies cricketer you are sure to confuse as a tearaway fast bowler, spun his left arm web over top order England batsman today in this first test match at Jamaica, picking up 2 crucial wickets of out of form Paul Collingwood & careless Kevin Pietersen who tried to go for fourth lofted shot in the same over in which he had hit 4, 6 & 4 already. Benn extracted enough bounce and spin out of Kingston ground pitch to beat the bat on several occasions.. unluckily, his figures don't prove it. (Scorecard). Pietersen played today like only Kevin Pietersen can - taking his time initially then flicking on the on side & driving on the up.. His contrastingly aggressive approach after the Tea Break prompted Captain Chris Gayle to keep his fielders close in as Hamsphire batsman reached 97 with an attacking shot. Benn flighted it up & KP fell into the trap - ball went miles perpendicularly over center of pitch and was caught comfortably by wicket keeper Denesh Ramdin. At the other end, Captain Gayle bowled 18 overs of his off-spinners artfully, giving away not even 2 runs per over. This resulted in very slow England run rate and the moment they lost Pietersen after Paul Collingwood & early loss of Cook, Strauss & Bell - West Indies certainly finished Day 1 marginally ahead after having lost the toss. It was a gloomy day, perfect for bowling. It even rained for dozen of minutes which halted game for some half an hour. West Indies captain didn't opt for second new ball after the 80th over, sighting the fading lights which eventually closed the day's play with 2 overs unbowled.
