Unfit (Sandy) outfield abandons Eng v WI Test Match at Antigua


Sandy-Bowler-Runup-Vivian-Richards-Ground-Antigua-140209.jpg 10 March 1997, Sabina Park ground in Kingston in Jamaica ~ an England vs West Indies test match was abandoned due to bad/dangerous pitch.. Physiotherapists/doctors came in twice in the first session itself as balls were jumping dangerously off a good length on the pitch.

Only 61 deliveries were bowled!

13 February 2009, today, Vivian Richards ground in North Sound in Antigua ~ another England vs West Indies test match produced an unimaginable result - abandoned due to unfit (sandy) outfield.. as you can see in the picture!

Only 10 deliveries were bowled.

So, this now becomes the shorted test match ever in International cricket.

Story started in usual manner with West Indies winning the toss and invited England in to bat. A perfect decision it was after visitors were dismissed for just 51 in second innings of previous test match. Jerome Taylor bowls 4 balls from over the wicket, uncomfortably before shifting to around the wicket to finish the first over. Fidel Edwards started streaming in from other end, slipped, started again only to stop after 4 deliveries.. he couldn't get a grip off his shoes and outfield underneath. it was like a fast bowler running on a beach! Some 10 inches of sand covered whole Vivian Richards ground outfield today and for sure, it wasn't upto the mark for International test match.

Sir Vivian Richards ground in Antigua was newly built for World Cup 2007 which raised eyebrows amoung the locals.. Situated at the coastal part of Antigua, North Sound location is like beach all around and growing grassy outfield will never be possible. Antigua already had tradional Recreation ground where Brain Lara played two of his record breaking innings (375 & also 400*) and authorities should have improved facilities there instead of creating ambarrshment for themselves though this second test match between England and West Indies, which was abandoned and another test match was added to England's itinerary of 4 test match series.. at only 2 days gap, at Recreation ground (where it should have been in first place!).
