In boxing ~ you beat the world champion to be the champion. in cricket - world cup (every 4 year event) defines who's the champion country until next world cup comes around.. not fair, is it? 4 year is a long duration in which any cricket team can lose form, fail to win & forget they were the reigning world champions!
January 2007 : itsonlycricket.com published an article, saying 'this should be the end of Aussie dominance' when Warne, McGrath & Langer retired on the same day. 14 months later, today, Indian rookie cricketers won the Commonwealth bank (CB) triseries beating home team Australia (2007 world cup winners) back to back in first two of best ... .. There's a trick to beating Australia : being alert all the time!
on a flat deck at Sydney - bowlers (specially spinners Harbhajan & Piyush Chawla) were awake all the time to keep Aussie batsmen in check in middle overs after initial breakthrough from Praveen Kumar who was given the new ball.
Note : 11 previous encounters, India had never beaten Australia at Sydney (in Onedayers). Sydney is also the same cricket ground were sad second test match was played.
Target? 240 from 50 overs. Full scorecard.
Fightable, isn't it? not really when Sachin Tendulkar scores a century. South Africans believe 'never sledge Sachin, it urges him on', but Australian ... .. Read complete article |

Cricket is a game of confidence. its about believing in your abilities & making comeback when opposition takes a lead on you..
7 hours of a oneday cricket match, champion teams seize little opportunities & capitalize on it. mediocre teams go down and down once they fall behind.
From 70/1 in 14 overs on a batting paradise - Lankan team were bowled out for just 179. I hate to say this, but Srilankans showed few signs of champion team they were in world cup 2007, just 10 month ago where they reached final. in 2008 triseries in Australia - they came third in a tournament of 3 teams.
Today at Bellerive cricket ground in ... .. Read complete article |

It was an unusual win toss, bat first innings : Jayasuriya (at non-striking end) got run out off a stright drive from Kumar Sangakkara which bowler Munaf Patel had just touched & stumps were borken. At 38th over mark, this unusual dismissal reoccurred. Praveen Kumar - the bowler, Mahela Jayawardene - the non-striker and batsman? Sangakkara again!
Srilanka were 8 for 2 in 3 overs. their innings needed rebuilding, so who better than captain & vice-captain you'll get. Jayawardene-Sangakkara Partnership first negotiated good bowling from Indian pacers than took quick 1s & 2s. odd risky shots but while this left-right batting combination were together - Srilankan total looked like blowing past 250 and more..
Jayawardene, as ... .. Read complete article |

India had never won an odi over Australia at Adelaide oval after 3 attempts before this match.. they still hasn't! Record stands at 4 played, 4 losses!
India vs Australia, Match 7 of current commonwealth bank triseries, yet again, failed to see a high scoring contest, although it would be wrong to blame the Adelaide Oval pitch. it had good bounce, no exaggerated swing or seam for bowlers and a lush green exceptionally fast outfield.. in other words - conditions were perfect for batters to dominate.
Script turned out exactly opposite : Australia huffed & puffed to 203 after winning the toss and bowlers defended their total. 19 wickets fell but only one batsman managed ... .. Read complete article |

Lets revisit a fact : if Australia don't reach the finals of this 2008 commonwealth Bank triangular series - they'll fall to second place in ODI rankings after being numero uno for a long long time.
After 5 of 12 league matches, points table has India, Australia & Srilanka on 8, 7 and 6 points respectively.. for sure - road to best of 3 final of this 'last' triseries in Australia is within grasp of all the three teams participating.
Interestingly, neither India nor Srilanka have ever won this annual tournament in australia for last 29 years.
On 12th february 2008, Tillakaratane Dilshan reignited Srilankan & his own fortunes as a cricketer after ... .. Read complete article |

Two more twists still remain, before we know the finalists of CB Triseries 2008. Points system of annual trination cricket tournament in Australia has always popped up interesting permutations & I assure cricket fans around the world that this year's points table would be no different.
Triseries has just began..
Today in Match 4 (of 12 league games in total), at Melbourne, batsmen from both teams disappointed. Indian pacers overshadowed Aussie fast bowling attack and secured India's first win at MCG ground in after 22 years! Scorecard.
Story, as always, started with coin toss which rolled into Ricky Ponting's favour who elected the obvious - batting. There WAS a time when ... .. Read complete article |

We all know how Shahid Afridi borrowed bat from Waqar Younis & went on to hit fastest ODI century - off 37 balls. in 1996 at Nairobi.
Same little story has repeated itself cause the bat Gautam Gambhir is using since Twenty20 world cup some 6 months ago - he had borrowed it from Virendra Sehwag. With same bat, today - Gambhir smashed 102 runs off just 101 balls & remained unbeaten. Scorecard.
Gambhir's century wasn't as scintillating as that one was by Afridi - but when measured from eyes of skill, hard work & teams' need - Gautam gaga today at Gabba in Brisbane was a class apart. Interestingly - for both batsmen with ... .. Read complete article |

How many times have India played Srilanka in Australia? Never! one instance when both teams had to meet in 1992 at Mackay - match was rained off!
On 5th February 2008, Srilanka resume their Australian tour in which they played the 2 test match series vs Australia 1+1/2 months ago (lost 2-0) & now its time for commonwealth bank triseries. first match is against Indians..
now don't read too much into that test series loss - Srilankan batsmen displayed good technique to cope with bouncing balls in those two tests against Australia. Trouble was - they lacked scoring shots. and their bowlers took too long to find right bowling length on Aussie pitches. Lankans have ... .. Read complete article |

Since 1979, Australia host a tri-nation one day tournament involving home team, and two visiting teams. I'll include a winners list of all Triseries in Australia over the years or see all info list on current (2008 triseries between India, Srilanka with Australia) but first - we start with the points system of these annual tri-series been played in Australia. Every year, this points table become utterly important as we come close to last few of this 12 league match tournament which has a best of 3 final (winner) system.
*Win with bonus = 5 points. *Win without bonus = 4 points. *Tie or no result = 2 points each. *Loss = 0 points. Read complete article |

Fact : Australia, world champions in ODI form of cricket, will slip down to 2nd position in world ranking if they don't reach the finals of current commonwealth bank tri-series.
Hope : Rain god stays away!
Match 1 (scorecard) - India were against home Aussie team, and captain Dhoni once again (since losing T20 game 2 days back) opted to bat first after coin came down in his favour. Sehwag chops one onto his stumps & Sachin Tendulkar hit his own wickets.. India 26/2 in 6.3 overs.
Then? magic. absolute magic as Gautam Gambhir - Rohit Sharma combo starts punishing Australian new ball bowlers. Square drives, cut over point, straight drives were ... .. Read complete article |

Sports channels to watch cricket is a complicated case in India. Every new series - new channels get the broadcasting rights and stump the viewers.
The coming Triangular cricket series between India, Australia and Srilanka to be played from February 3 to mid-march would be live on Channel "Star Sports"(the ESPN channel) and on Doordarshan - or DD1 or DD National as people might know it as.
DD1 will also show the Ind v Aus T20 match on 1st Feb.
The trick is - Starsports is available through Dish TV (the direct-to-home) satellite service in India but not through rival Tata Sky. So - it becomes a must for those using Tata Sky that ... .. Read complete article |

One way to select cricket squad is by packing all the arsenals available in your country. Other way is to form a team, adjusting only those players who are enthusiastic & hungry for success.
Looking at Indian squad for the CB Tri series in Australia 2008 (match table) - I see youth. Looking at Srilankan squad - I see fast bowlers whereas Australian squad for the triseries is yet to be announced.
Surprisingly, Indian selectors have opted for two spinners whereas Srilanka - who were known for their twickers - have dropped Malinga Bandara, opted for 5 seam bowlers and only spinner is Muthiah Muralithanran.
Fielding is another key aspect of one day ... .. Read complete article |

It took 31 years for India to win a test match in Australia. in 8 attempts - India have never beaten Aussies in a test series in their den, although 1981 series ended in 1-1 draw.
Talk about one day internationals : 6 wins from 30 ODIs verses Australia in Australia. (see Ind v Aus head to head).
In short - Indian performance in Australia can only improve!
and improvement comes from opportunities. like Indian cricket team has from 26th Dec 2007 to 7th March 2008 tour. 4 test matches (known as Border Gawaskar trophy, The 3 mobile test series) and Commonwealth bank one day series including Srilanka (which makes it a triseries) ... .. English cricket season starts early in the month of May. untill late July, they host two International teams..
Caribbean cricket schedule is from March to May, hosting two top quality cricketing sides. Proteas act as host nation from December to January.. but when does India see cricket on home soil?? never, or more accurately - whenever our team is home, and someone free to adjust a tour. BCCI needs to invitation to send an invitation.
Not the case with Australia though. From late late October to early February - two full test series against best of opposition, and then a long trination series is what Aussie cricket fans always get. each year.. and this year - its India ... .. Read complete article |
